LTA - Lead Inclusion School Innovation Project

This innovation project aims to increase physical activity levels of disabled children and young people in education through Tennis. The project will educate teachers to embed sustainable tennis as a core sport, providing exit route opportunities through to LTA's open court venues locally.

Description

Evidence of need: This project builds on the pilot initially ran with the LTA in Year 1. The aim is to continue to grow incrementally so that we gather learnings of what worked well, where we could improve and, looking ahead, how we could continue to upscale this to a national level. As a result, we are looking for 10 new Lead Inclusion schools to expand the effectiveness of the initiative.

What's involved: Each Lead Inclusion School works with a minimum of five schools, aiming to get between five (minimum) and eight teachers at a minimum on the LTA training. Each school can send more than one member of staff. The school will also work with three volunteers to create and deliver a festival with the local LTA club with a focus of inclusive tennis by inviting local schools to experience tennis in the community setting.

Outcomes:

For the School/Deliverer:

  • Evidence of a strengthened school to club link pathway
  • Tennis team challenge festival at a local Open Court tennis venue - which includes a specific strand aligned to competition (could be incorporated into a carousel of activities but needs an explicit focus on the competitive experience; aligned to Positive Experiences through the School Games)
  • Leadership opportunities for young people.

For the Young People:

  • More young disabled people playing tennis in school
  • More young people playing competition in school
  • Links to the local open court venues which will help provide exit routes into the sport
  • Opportunity to gain leadership experience and confidence.

For your school to take part in this programme you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • YST Lead Inclusion School

Duration: Upon acceptance to the programme you will remain involved until 31 December 2024. The deadline for expressions of interest is 30 June 2024.
